Rough Circle is located above one of the many points along the valley where the river intersects with the canal, creating The Barrow Navigation.
In the 1600’s un-navigable sections of the river were impacting the size and design of boats capable of transporting goods. By the early 1700’s engineering works had commenced to improve the waterway to allow passage of larger boats.
Locks and weirs were built alongside the river to circumvent the rocky shallow sections, and by 1785 there were 60,000 tons of goods being transported annually on barges pulled by horses along the towpath. Lock houses and stables were built at locks to provide places of rest and shelter for the bargemen and horses.
